Dr. Levmore Marks International Agunah Day at the Knesset!

Dr. Levmore addresses Knesset committee

The coordinator was invited to speak in the Knesset, at a meeting of the Committee for the Advancement of Women’s Status signifying International Agunah Day, chaired by MK Aliza Lavie and in the presence of MK’s, social activists and representatives of the Justice and Welfare Ministries. The specific topic of the meeting, which was broadcast live from the Knesset, was Prenuptial Agreements for the Prevention of Get-Refusal. The coordinator spoke alongside a PowerPoint presentation, which demonstrated the development of the “Agreement for Mutual Respect” by experts in Jewish law – both male and female – from without the rabbinical establishment, in an autonomous manner. The effectiveness of the Agreement for Mutual Respect was recognized, despite the resistance of a number of Rabbinical Court Judges. A discussion was had as to the need and method for further dissemination, despite the opposition of those particular judges. The summation of the meeting was that prenuptial agreements for the prevention of get-refusal are successful in preventing the agunah problem from arising and the State must find a way to have every marrying couple sign one.
