What an Amazing Celebration! A couple of weeks ago, Young Israel in Israel celebrated its annual Bar and Bat Mitzvah program, honoring nearly 35 deaf and hard-of-hearing young men and women from all over Israel together with their families and friends. This special event is the culmination of our yearlong Judaic Heritage Program for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired. The boys and girls each enjoyed meaningful and unique ceremonies. The boys put on tallit and tefillin and received an aliyah at the Kotel, while the girls participated in a special ceremony in a unique archaeological area beneath the Kotel. As part of the day's activities, both groups took part in hands-on archaeological digs and visited the Shaar HaShamayim exhibit of Western Wall Heritage Foundation, where they learned about the central importance of Yerushalayim throughout Jewish history. The celebration continued with a festive Seudat Mitzvah, featuring divrei bracha from Rabbi Shmuel
Dr. Rachel Levmore, director of the YI /JAFI Agunah & Get-Refusal Prevention Project delivered a Torah lecture in English at a Shavuot night learning marathon in the Rimon neighborhood in Efrat, organized by The Women’s Beit Midrash. The title of the lecture was “Establishing the Name of the Deceased: A Natural Need?” The lecture included an overview of the laws of Yibbum and Halitza from Antiquity until modern day practice in the Israeli Rabbinical Courts.
