Program Overview

Our Work

The Judaic Heritage Program for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired, established in 2000, was the first to bring Judaism to Israel’s Deaf community. It has evolved to focus on youth programming and bridging the Deaf and Hearing worlds through Jewish traditions.

Programming for Youth and Young Adults

Strengthening Jewish and Zionist identity through activities, celebrating Jewish milestones and empowering Deaf youth.

Annual Deaf Bar/Bat Matzvah Celebration

The Bar/Bat Mitzvah event gathers nearly 200 guests in all, and grows each year.

Programming for Youth and Young Adults

The program strengthens Jewish and Zionist identity through interactive activities, celebrating Jewish milestones and festivals, and empowering Deaf youth to reach their potential. It continuously expands to reach more of this population.

Our partnership with Maagalei Shema after-school network helps extend our reach. Shema, a non-profit, advances children with hearing loss and integrates them into Israeli society, working with the Education Ministry’s centers across Israel.

In addition to participating in the Annual Bar/Bat Mitzvah Celebration, YI Israel and Shema launched new programs in 2017, including Heritage Tours and Tiyulim throughout the school year and summer.

Annual Bar/Bat Mitzvah Celebration

This semester-long program begins with in-depth Jewish education and culminates in a full-day event where Deaf young adults from across Israel celebrate their Bar/Bat Mitzvah with peers, family, and school counselors. Participants come from every city, from Eilat in the South to northern border communities.

The program expands yearly, with the Deaf students receiving Torah and Jewish values education in their respective cities. The celebration includes a ceremony, festive meal, and a tour of Jerusalem’s Old City, gathering nearly 200 guests.

This program not only provides an enriching Jewish experience but also fosters friendships and connections among Deaf students from across the country.
