Shabbat Aliyah 5787
Project Overview
SHABBAT ALIYAH 5787
Shabbat Parshat Lech Lecha
October 24, 2026 י”ג מר חשון תשפ”ז
42 communities across Israel. One Shabbat. Celebrating the Olim who have chosen to build their lives here.
The Mizrachi–Young Israel Shuls Network will mark Shabbat Parshat Lech Lecha as a national moment of recognition for those who have made Aliyah.
An Annual Tradition
Our goal is to establish Shabbat Parshat Lech Lecha as a fixed date in the calendar of Israeli kehillot: a yearly opportunity to celebrate the Olim in every community and deepen the bonds between Olim and veteran Israelis.
Lech Lecha: Where Aliyah Began
In Parshat Lech Lecha, Avraham Avinu answers the call to leave his land and go to the Land of Israel. It was the first Aliyah, and every oleh since has followed in his footsteps. The Shabbat Aliyah Project uses this moment in the Torah reading cycle to give Kehillot across Israel a dedicated Shabbat to recognize the journeys of Olim from all over the world, honor their contributions, and affirm the role they play in the life of the Kehilla.
From a Personal Milestone to a Communal Celebration
For many Olim, Aliyah is marked privately, on the anniversary of the day they arrived. Shabbat Aliyah makes it something the whole community recognizes and celebrates together, with many other communities across the country. As thousands of Jews choose to move to Israel each year, it is more meaningful than ever to step back and acknowledge the courage, sacrifice and idealism of Aliyah.
How Communities are Celebrating
Each participating community has chosen the programming that suits its character and capacity:
- Kiddushim, Oneg Shabbat and Seudah Shlishit events in honor of the community’s Olim.
- An Aliyah-themed Drasha, Shiur, or Parent-Child Learning.
- Personal Reflections - Olim share the challenges, the milestones, and what it means to build a life in Israel.
- A Scholar-in-Residence - an Oleh from another community.
