What’s new in Karmiel?

This past quarter was an exciting one at the Young Israel of Karmiel. The Young Israel participated with our largest representation at the Nefesh BNefesh Go North Annual Shabbaton in Akko. Rabbi Schwartz spoke numerous times over Shabbos as one of the Scholars in Residence and led a tour through the Old City of Akko. Many new Olim expressed appreciation and interest in visiting Karmiel and our lovely community after the Shabbaton.
This was the first year the Young Israel did not have a communal Purim Seuda. Our community has grown to the point where many families preferred to host other families in the community. We did however have a joint Israeli and American Seuda for the families that did not have a place to go with live musical accompaniment that many from the larger community joined.
We also had our annual Purim appeal for the Shul and as in every year we surpassed our previous campaigns, raising over 9000 NIS in the two week campaign. In addition thousands of shekel were raised and distributed for our Matanot L’Evyonim and Maot Chittim campaign to support our local needy families.
This year as well The Young Israel partnered with Keren Ora in the Yeshivat Bein Hazmanim program in which many of our local yeshiva students came together and studied each day on their vacation and they were given prizes and trips at the end for this highly successful partnership.
Rabbi Schwartz has also had quite a few meetings with the city planners about the legality of our shul building and the process of obtaining the necessary temporary permits to continue using our building until another one is provided. We are scheduled to meet with the mayor once again in the coming weeks to discuss his fulfillment of this pledge to provide us with our own building and quite a few city councilman have stood up and are advocating on our behalf.
