Diaspora Agunot Law legislated into a permanent law

Permanent Agunah Law change- thanks to Dr. Levmore

Following the letter sent by Dr. Rachel Levmore of the YI Agunah and Get-Refusal Prevention Project together with the President of the Conference of European Rabbis, Rabbi Pinchas Goldshmidt to the chair of the Knesset Constitution and Law Committee, asking for the “Diaspora Agunot Law” to be legislated into a permanent law, on Nov 23, 2021 the Committee entered into discussion. Both Dr. Levmore and Rabbi Goldshmidt spoke before the Knesset Committee. Dr. Levmore stressed the interest of Rabbinical Courts of the Diaspora in this law as they have no other legal recourse to free these agunot. Rabbi Goldshmidt spoke of its effectiveness in bringing men to give the get. Indeed, the suggested legislation, as a permanent law was voted in unanimously. Thus the first step was taken, with the largest hurdle passed, towards the State of Israel serving as a permanent savior of agunot in the Diaspora, should the get-refusing men step foot in Israel.
